Lake Quinsigamond swim ban lifted
Wednesday, September 14, 2011
TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
WORCESTER — The health advisory for Lake Quinsigamond was lifted after water samples taken Monday showed the water quality has returned to normal levels.
“We are pleased to report that the latest samples obtained from Lake Quinsigamond yesterday indicated that the water has returned to acceptable levels,” Public Health Director Derek Brindisi said.
Normal activities around the section of the lake south of the Route 9 bridge can resume.
Thursday’s heavy rain caused a bypass of two sewage pump stations, resulting an increased level of bacteria in the water around the bridge.
For several days, officials said people should not fish, boat, swim or conduct any other recreational activities involving contact with the water.

As a result of Thursday morning’s heavy rains, a bypass of two sewer pump stations has resulted in bacteria levels exceeding acceptable water quality standards south of the Route 9 Bridge at Lake Quinsigamond.
To protect the public’s health and the environment, Shrewsbury and Worcester Public Health officials are advising area residents not utilize this section of Lake Quinsigamond for recreational purposes such as fishing, boating and bathing. Public Health officials will continue to monitor and sample the affected area to ensure bathing water quality.

Grant to add 13 acres to Green Hill Park Hiking trail from lake:
Friday, July 1, 2011
By Nicole Burnett SPECIAL TO THE TELEGRAM & GAZETTE
WORCESTER — A state grant to buy nearly 13 acres of forested woodland will extend the size of Green Hill Park, and allow for the connection of a hiking trail from Lake Quinsigamond to downtown Worcester.
Lt. Governor Timothy P. Murray visited Worcester yesterday to announce $602,525 in Conservation Partnership Grants that will assist nine nonprofit organizations, including the Greater Worcester Land Trust, in preserving 136 acres of open space throughout Massachusetts.
Mr. Murray made the announcement in a meadow outside the Notre Dame Health Care Center on Plantation Street. The meadow is part of nearly 13 acres the Greater Worcester Land Trust offered to buy from the Sisters of Notre Dame for $430,000 and resell to the city for $172,500 provided the land is designated as part of Green Hill Park. The park has lost about 65 acres over the years to various projects, most notably the construction of Interstate 290 in the late 1960s.
The addition to the park includes an easement that will enable completion of East Side Trail, a 3.5-mile-long foot path that extends from Lake Quinsigamond into downtown Worcester. The purchase will also help preserve a native brook trout habitat, Coal Mine Brook.
The GWLT was awarded $85,000 in grants for the Green Hill Park project.

The Kenneth F. Burns Bridge carries Route 9, known as Belmont Street in Worcester and Turnpike Road in Shrewsbury, over Lake Quinsigamond. This is the fifth crossing to be built at this location, the
first being a floating bridge that consisted of logs chained together to carry horse-drawn wagons on the Boston-Worcester Turnpike. The current structure dates from 1916 and has been repaired and reconfigured several times throughout the past ninety years.
The MassDOT is asking for public input as it concerns the replacement of the Bridge over Lake Quinsigamond.
Public input is important to the MassDOT's decision process to determine which alternative best suits the Lake and the affected, residential, commuter, consumer, and business communities.
For questions, or you would like to be added to the project Email or US Mail distribution list contact Stephanie Boundy, Public outreach Coordinator for Mass DOT's Accelerated Bridge Program by phone 617-973-8049 or you can Email her at Stephanie.Boundy@state.ms.us

Lake Quinsigamond Water Tests Being Conducted Resulting From Sewerage Spill
The City of Worcester, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Town of Shrewsbury are conducting tests today and over the next few days resulting from a sewerage spill in the morning of July 2nd. Two City of Worcester pump stations failed to keep pace with heavy flows resulting from a heavy rainstorm that swept through the area. As a result, an underdetermined amount of sewerage made its way into the Lake in the Lake Quinsigamond Bridge (Rte 9) area and in the southern area of Lake Quinsigamond.
The public will be advised of the results of this testing but in the interim great care should be taken while making use of Lake Quinsigamond.

DRAWDOWN
BEGINS - 11/12/2008
The Lake Quinsigamond Commission plans to lower the water level, or draw down, Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond on or shortly after Wednesday, November 12, 2008. The Irish Dam in Grafton will be lowered two or three inches a day until the water elevation in Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond is twenty-four to thirty inches lower than normal. The purpose of the drawdown is to expose the roots of nuisance aquatic vegetation proliferating in Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond to freezing temperatures and thereby reducing some of the heavy weed growth along the shoreline and in the shallow areas of the lake and pond.
